Barcelona

City:
The cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea and the second most populous city in Spain (1.6 million inhabitants). The capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia is known for its vibrant street life and the art of Gaudi’s.
Public transport in Barcelona: As one of the most leading tourist, trade fairs and cultural centres, Barcelona offers a wide range of bus tram and metro connections, as well as funiculars and aerial cable cars.
In the project: The ELIPTIC activities in Barcelona are led by TMB and include BSM and CENIT-UPC.
ELIPTIC use cases in Barcelona:

Pillar A - Opportunity fast (re)charging and slow overnight charging of electric buses based on metro infrastructure

The local operator, TMB, investigates the feasibility of using energy from the metro system for charging e-buses as well as the effects of overnight charging / maintenance during night hours (while the metro system is not operated) and the potential cost reduction of using the energy system at off peak hours. If possible, the study will be linked to Barcelona’s demonstration within the ZeEUS project. The ELIPTIC demonstration will include using the existing metro infrastructure to charge electric buses in two ways: opportunistically and also at the depot in slow charging mode.

Pillar C - Use of metro/tram infrastructure for recharging e-cars (municipal fleet and private e-cars)

The stakeholders analyse the potential of using energy from the city’s metro infrastructure to opportunistically charge vehicles stationary in parking lots. In the second period of the ELIPTIC project, a demo will be launched to in the new business district of the city for opportunity recharging electric vehicles at on-street and off-street parking lots.
